Self Advocate

Joyce Cargle has been an active member of CAU for 26 years and is a respected employee. Joyce works part time for CAU on the Cleaning Crew.

Joyce has solidified her advocacy skills as a 1997 graduate of the Partners in Policymaking (PIP) program through the NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Joyce is the Sergeant at Arms of Helping Hands Advocacy group. Joyce is also a member of CAU advocacy group The New American Movement for People With Disabilities where she attended an 8 week training on what is a mentor and is a graduate of our Sid Katz Mentorship program.

Joyce has met with Governor Murphy, Senators, Assembly people, Freeholders, attended advocacy conferences and trainings. Joyce was actively involved in having a resolution signed by Mayor Bollllwage and the City Council of Elizabeth declaring March as Disability Awareness month for the city of Elizabeth.

Joyce is extremely involved in self- advocacy with the opportunities that she has found at CAU Joyce has learned valuable employment skills as a self-advocate and an advocate for others. Joyce is very passionate about helping people, she is always advocating for all not just people with disabilities. Joyce is a very strong advocate she will research about and speak out for all causes. Joyce has received the Colleen Frazier award twice for her work in advocacy.

Joyce loves going out with her friends, whether it be on recreational events, traveling, shopping with her staff and most of all being in CAU plays. Joyce never let anything break her in spite of the challenges she has faced.
